The Space Between - March 1, 2012
Artists call it "negative space", the areas that surround the objects in a painting. They create interesting shapes in their own rights and if drawn carefully will render the objects themselves realistically and true, avoiding the inevitable incorrect drawing not of what is seen but of what we expect, based on our conditioned way of seeing.
This precious space between exists also outside of paintings and is surprisingly full of meaning. The connection between us is neither one nor the other but provides space for new arising of energy, ideas, possibilities, creativity. The context in which everything exists, though less known to us than the objects themselves, is arguably the more interesting possibility, certainly the more mysterious and likely to engage imagination.
