Performer and Audience - July 11, 2012

We are currently attending the Oregon Bach Festival where we have the role of audience members. Last night at part 3 of St. Matthew Passion, I was swept into the deepest sadness, bliss, ecstasy, of not only the story of the Passion, the brilliance of the music, the superb musicianship of the artists, but also the flow of the wordless conversation between performers and audience. It was deeply emotional and intimate, yet also universal and inclusive of so much more than what was transpiring in the concert hall at that moment.

It occurs to me that audience is an active ingredient in performance and I feel a part of the whole in these beautiful concerts, not just a passive observer. There is energy moving back and forth between performer and audience that feels like a dance.

I am bathed in gratitude for this experience.
