Hitting Bottom - May 26, 2014

Over and over again we bumped ground trying to circumnavigate the island in an insufficiently high tide. Rowing through water that was literally as deep as an egret's knee or seagull's thigh (we know because they stood chuckling at us), muck raking the bottom, bumping and sliding on the silty mud, we dredged a cross channel until eventually there was enough water in which to actually row. Never mind that it was against a strong tide and by now stiff cross wind that made rowing as effortful as pushing through mud.

We concluded with the sense of having learned much first hand, making it through an unpredictable situation using our patience and intuition in deciding when to go with or against tide, wind, ocean floor. Another reminder of who/what is in charge.
