Too Late for Pessimism - June 9, 2014

This quote from a Norwegian fisherman in response to his feelings about climate change seems about perfect. I feel that in my bones. We are in the final inning of the biggest game of all, the stakes could not be higher, and the excitement is exhilarating. That's because the possibilities are beyond our wildest dreams, for a full range of outcomes. We are living in a time where we get to find out if large brain evolution was a good strategy or destined to be a dead end branch on the genetic tree ravaged by that brain.

But unlike a big game, it likely won't be suddenly over, one way or the other. In the same way that the problem of climate change can be hard to see in moment to moment impacts, the results of our actions will also be subtle and slowly revealed over time requiring all kinds of ingenuity and adaptation on the way.

It's exciting that literally everyone has a role, diverse expertise is necessary, and no one worldview holds the entire vision nor answers. It will take an enormous amount of energy and faith to stay engaged.
