Life and Death - October 14, 2012

Varanasi, that most sacred place to die, integrates life and death naturally, simply, easily.....or so it appears. Each time I walked past the old burning ghat (place of ritual cremation) I viewed several cremations in various states, in public, between the laundry steps, and the commerce area, just part of life.

This has been a time of honoring the recently dead and the woman below built an elaborate clay, flower, rice, vermillion, cloth structure that she chanted, poured Ganga water over, and rotated burning ghee around. She was involved with her devotion and not the least bit interested in our curiosity.

Wasn't she a wonder to behold? Her focused presence in the midst of multiple distractions informs my own need to return constantly to source. Your image is transportative...

Yes, one can feel her focused intensity even in the image. I am grateful for witnessing and experiencing the depth of personal devotion such as she embodies.
