Making the Most - October 7, 2012

Sonabai,a poor, rural Indian woman who was confined to her small home by her husband for decades, chose creativity over madness. Using simple and available materials, such as clay, sticks, straw, hair, rope and paint, she gradually developed a unique folk art style of decorating all of her walls.

My current tour leader has written a book about her and showed us a room of her work which was created after her discovery, and resides at the Siskriti Foundation Museum. A small sample is below - unfortunately captured in poor light.

Sonabai and her art is so uplifting, so transformative! Knowing her and witnessing her creativity changed my life. Your graphic interpretation of this sculpture expresses her ability to break away from the confinement of her life and move freely through her art.
