Expect Delays - September 13, 2014
So said the portentous freeway sign providing wise counsel to travelers, and makes me smile in gratitude for the transportation gurus spreading highway wisdom.
And, as I prepare for the People's Climate March in NYC in a week, I see the other side of this aphorism .... we've waited so long, we can ill afford more delays in united action on limiting carbon release.
Someone recently said to me that it's wonderful to be working towards saving our planet as we know it. This is definitely not the goal of current climate activism. That possibility was extinguished at least decades if not centuries ago. The only way out is forward. The question is forward on a planet that supports our species or one that does not, leaving this baby species (only 300,000 years old) with the dubious distinction as the most fouling of it's own home (the entire planet).
We are literally in a race of brain capacity and maturity against our ecological species "overshoot" of habitat capacity, the usual end of successful species.
We face the unprecedented (to our knowledge) test of whether large brain evolutionary strategy will prove to be a possible way around the usual species succession. Having destroyed the other Homo species, we carry the only banner for the genus. We have a front row seat to this most amazing story and an active role in it, whatever role we choose.
