Sir James MacMillan's soulful European Requiem premiered last night under the energetic and sensitive baton of Matthew Halls and left us silently breathing as the heart beat throb of the orchestra dissolved into stillness.
In his earlier talk, MacMillan, a devout Catholic, discussed that the faith of a composer allowed a broader open canvass, a less limited view, than an atheistic perspective. He presented this from a scholarly, non passionate perspective, and in his case it appears to be true. The music was truly sublime and uniquely creative, new, and fresh. Deeply, deeply felt and rendered.
