Impermanent Art - September 22, 2016
William Kentridge has done a mural along the Tiber River, Triumphs and Laments, that is sinking into oblivion which is only one of the reasons that I love it. Close to where we are staying in Trastevere it blends unassumingly with the landscape, no signage, just large posterized black on light images from Rome's history as interpreted by the artist, who appears to love depicting horses.
The methodology was to apply masks to the dirt darkened river bank old stone walls, then wash the uncovered part leaving a dark image on lighter background. Both colors look natural and are unpainted. The image will dissolve over time as the white inevitably darkens. Interestingly there is no sign of graffiti except at the far edges, away from the story.
