Wings - September 29, 2016

It's hard to miss all the winged humans in painting and sculpture in Italy and I am intrigued since birds are attracting my attention these days. I suppose the superficial meaning has to do with linking humans heavenward, carrying us to places our earthbound feet do not naturally take us. Is that what calls me besides loving the sensation of flying?

And still absorbed in everything Caravaggio, I look forward to seeing this one next week. That angel is like no other, standing in good tango position, with realistic bird like wings. Mary and her baby look natural. Caravaggio not only got away with bringing such sensuality into religious painting but people loved the work at the time and even more now.

It's interesting to see the monstrously rich basilicas virtually empty of followers yet filled with tourists, oh and the occasional self important robed clerics briskly walking around for no discernible purpose.
