Darker Shades - October 7, 2011

Driving north in Saskatchewan under low rainy skies, the scenery changes radically in color intensity and shading. I notice the black soil, black branches of bushes and trees, and dark shadows, surrounded by deep, intense yellows of harvested crops. Now the sloughs are greyed and opaque.

It’s like landscape eyeliner, outlines of edges, deepening of shadow, as if it were all painted on a dark ground. I am spending time with family I’ve not seen in decades or even not met before, and the interactions are likewise deepened, underscored by the preciousness of the moment.

Pastel - fractalized, 10/11
